Winter session of the Odisha Assembly openes today only to become an outdoor affair by the member

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha assembly on Tuesday opened the winter session but on the very first day it was only to be adjourned for the day at 11.35 after two adjournments. The house surrendered before the uproar of the members both in the opposition and in the treasury bench as well.
As soon as Speaker Pradip Amat called to start the Question Hour, both the Congress and BJP shouted on farmers’ issues. They were loud enough to make it sure that their voice could not be heard. And they continued it till the speaker adjourned the house for an hour. As the condition in the house did not change when it was resumed after an hour he suspended the house again for 30 minutes before he did it finally for the day.
The ruling BJD legislators made use of the opportunity to stage a show in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the assembly premise. They were demanding for a hiked Minimum Support Price (MSP) of paddy. This was also an issue concerning the farmers.
BJD MLA Amar Prasad Satpathy said that his party was protesting against the Center’s apathy towards their demand to increase MSP of paddy. He said they were protesting because the Prime Minister did not give time to the House Committee formed for Paddy MSP.
Congress accused both BJD and BJP of playing politics on farmers’ issues. Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra called the Speaker to convene an all party meeting to find a way to sort out the farmers’ problems.
For BJP, Padmapur MLA Pradip Purohit said that his party demanded for identification of sharecroppers to make them eligible for compensation for their crop loss. He added that farmers in Odisha have suffered a lot in 18 years of rule of BJD in Odisha.
