Kunduli rape victim kills herself

Bhubaneswar: The 14 year girl from Kunduli, Koraput who had brought rape charges against security personnel in October last year finally gave in after hundred days of her encounter with the system.

Yesterday in the after noon the girl’s relatives took her off the hanging and rushed to the Kunduli Hospital only to learn “received dead” by the doctors.

On October 10 last year, the class- ix tribal student brought a charge that four men had molested her on her way back home. To make the issue more sensitive she mentioned that the attackers were in army fatigue spreading a tremor across the state.

Koraput Police conducted the investigation into the case. Through the investigation the police had not shown if the security personnel were at all involved in the ceime. Rather the Human Right Protection Cell of Odisha Police ruled out the entire allegation of the girl by reporting on November 7 that there was no trace of rape.

Since the incident the minor girl went through a series of medical tests, treatments and councelling but she refused to admit what she alleged to have been forced to do that she was not raped. She had alleged of being tortured to relent. She subsequently accused the DG police of bribing her.

Such outcomes stirred statewide reactions. BJP and Congress shot demand of CBI probe.As the shout on the issue gained pitch Odisha government assigned the case to the Crime Branch on October 8 and also ordered a judicial enquary.

No sooner did the news of the girl’s suicide break in Media than the political outfits in the opposition took to the street. Hundred of BJP workers were arrested while trying to force towards the Naveen Niwas. BJP has warned statewide protest against the government for this incident.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP’s face in odisha tweeted, “Deeply anguished by the suicide of Kunduli gang rape survivor. Law & Order in Odisha has completely collapsed. A little bit of sensitivity on their part could have saved a valuable life. Now after her death, it is even more pertinent to punish all those behind this heinous crime.”

CM Naveen Patnaik has expressed deep grief over the “tragic incidence of suicide of the alleged Kunduli rape victim.”
