An under-construction bridge in Bhubaneswar collapsed killing a man and leaving his 5-years daughter along with 16 others injured.
The pathetic incident took place at around 1PM on Sunday while roofing work of the bridge was underway. Poor centring is said to have let a portion of the bridge give in.
Odisha CM Naveen Pattnaik has expressed his grief for the casualties in the unfortunate incident and announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia help to the kin of the deceased and the total treatment responsibility of the injureds. He has warned of exemplary action against the person found guilty.
Government has ordered a high level investigation into the incident whiletwo engineers involved in the bridge work have been suspended.
Expressing his deepest condolence to the bereaved family Naveen Pattnaik said“I am shocked to learn about the death of one person in the unfortunate incident.” and added”Two engineers have been suspended and high-level investigation has been ordered. Exemplary action would be taken against the persons found guilty,”
Three ODRAF units, two NDRF teams, ten fire tenders, sniffer dogs and police personnels caried out a combined search and rescue operation for 7 hours before it was officially declared that no person dead or alive was present under the debris.
Work of the flyover between Bomikhal and Sahid Nagar, a project of Road and Building (R&B) of Odisha government was started in 2012 to be completed by 2014 but it has been protracted by three years beyond the given time period.
Panda infra is under contract to execute the project. For reasons best known to the company the project is trudginf for five years.
