BJD SEEKS BILL ON ODISHA LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL IN THE WINTER SESSION OF PARLIAMENT

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is all set to start the legislative process for a legislative council in Odisha. The ruling party in Odisha posted its demand for a constitution amendment bill on Sunday in the all-party meeting before the winter session of the parliament. The winter session of the parliament begins on Monday.

BJD MP Pinaki Mishra said about this after he attended the meeting. He said BJD requested for a consensus on the bill that would pave the way for the upper house in Odisha. The proposed legislative council will have reservations for women; SC and ST.

The Naveen Patnaik government in Odisha had passed a resolution in the Assembly on September 6, Last year for constituting a Legislative Council in Odisha based on a committee report. The Committee had submitted a report on August 3, 2018, after surveying the workings of the legislative Council system in different states in India.

Currently, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Utter Pradesh, and Telangana are the six out of 28 states in India that have bicameral legislatures. Odisha has initiated a move to have a bicameral legislative system since 2015.
