For India, for PV Sindhu, this is gold in the badminton world championship! Sindhu wrote the history in a 38-minute emphatic expression in the St. Jakoshalle court, against Nozomi Okuhara of Japan at Basel, Switzerland. She became the first-ever Indian to win a BWF World Championship.

Sindhu who had two successive misses in the last two world championships finals clinched the gold this time through her power and skill by beating Okuhara 21-7, 21-7.

Two years back at Glasgow, Sindhu had lost to Okuhara after a 110-minute final encounter, last year Carolina Marin prevented her from making history.

Previously, Sindhu had two bronze medals from the World Championship. With this gold, her medal tally from the world championship counts five to share the top slot with Zhang Ning in world championship medal collection.

Sindhu has an Olympic Silver from Rio and also an Asian Games silver from Jakarta.  Last year, she had won the BWF World Tour Finals.

PM Narendra Modi has congratulated the stupendously talented Sindhu for making India proud again with the win.

He tweets, “the stupendously talented Sindhu makes India proud again! Congratulations to her for winning the Gold at the BWF World Championships. The passion and dedication with which she’s pursued badminton is inspiring. PV Sindhu’s success will inspire generations of players.”
