President of India Ramnath Kovind signed the general –category-reservation oriented constitution amendment bill on January 12, to make it an Act.
The new Act will be called (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019.
A notification by the Ministry of Law reads, “The President of India has given assent to the Constitution (One Hundred and Third) Amendment Act, 2019 today. This Act may be called the Constitution (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019. It shall come into force on such date as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint”
The Act allows the state to provide 10% reservation quota for the Economically Weaker section in the government jobs and in Higher Education
Last week the Parliament of India had passed the bill in this regard with almost unanimity after hours of debate in the Lok Sabha on January 8, and in the Rajya Sabha on January 9. However, in the Rajya Sabha, the opposition wanted the bill to be sent to the select committee for more deliberation which was not accepted by the house.
The Act by amending the Article 15 and Article 16 of the Constitution gives rights to the states to provide up to 10% of reservation,in addition to the existing provision, in favor of the economically weaker sections of the citizens in admission in the Educational institutions and in appointments and jobs for their advancement.
