
In the sensational Nirbhaya gang -rape and murder case, the Patiala House Court Delhi, on January 7, issued the death warrant against the four culprits. They will be hanged to death on Januar 22 at 7 AM. The execution will take place at Jail No 3 of the Tihar Jail.
The four death row convicts are Mukesh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26), and Akshay Kumar Singh (31).
The Court conveyed the order to the convicts through the video conferencing. Parents of Nirbhaya had moved to the court seeking early execution of death order.
Earlier in the day, the Court heard concerned parties on the plea on the execution of the death warrant, before the Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora pronounced the order in the afternoon.
The fast track court on 13 September 2013 awarded death sentence to the four criminals. In the following legal course available to the convicts, the High Court retained the punishment on March 13, 2013. Subsequently, the Supreme Court, after a yearlong hearing, upheld the death penalty on March 27, 2017.
The Supreme Court rejected the review petition of Akshaya Kumar on December 18 last year, before it, review petitions of other three had met the same fate in the Supreme Court on July 9.2018.
The culprits’ effort seeking mercy in the Delhi government also failed to fetch results.
After the order, Asha Devi- the victim’s mother, said that her daughter got justice. The decision would restore people’s hope in the judicial system, she said.
Of the six criminals, Ram Singh committed suicide in the Jail, while on Juvenile co-criminal spent three years in a reformation home.
At midnight on 16 December 2012, a physiotherapy student- Nirbhaya met with brutal sexual and physical assault on a moving bus. Six persons in the bus raped her, tore her, and threw her out of the bus to die. That ultimately led to her death.
The heinous act of the crime rocked the nation. Public reaction against crime and criminals simmered, thus making the government bring about harsh reforms in the justice delivery system against rape-crime.
