Mufti Mohammad Sayeed,CM Jammu and Kashmir dies

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir died in the early morning of Thursday in the hospital of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. He was undergoing medical treatment there for pneumonia since Dec 24.

The medical authority cites multiple organ failure as the cause of death of Mr. Syeed. He was 79.

Mr. Sayeed was leading a coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir with Bharatiya janata Party (BJP) since March 2014 following a fractured mandate came in the state election.
Born on 12 January 1936, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had begun his political career with National Conference in the 1950s. His career in politics for six decades underlines his two stints as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Home Minister berth in –the only Muslim till date to occupy the post in the union government.

As an astute political player he crafted alliance with BJP, his ideological opposite in 2015 to ride to power. In 2002 he had allied with congress to become the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

Through his political course that witnessed the emergence of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as the formidable force against the mighty Abdullah Family in the political arena of Jammu and Kashmir, he deserted National Conference in 1977 to join Congress that he quit in 1987 in solidarity with V P Singh and became Home Minister in the National front government in 1989.He had returned to Congress in 1991 before he floated a regional party named Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999.
