bHUBANESWAR: As post-engagement career chances of the Agniveers are drawing debate, ministries of the Central government are coming forward with plans to address them. Home Ministry has assured priorities to the Agniveers in the Central Armed Police Force and Assam Rifles. The Department of Telecom (DOT) has also taken initiatives to make scope for the Agniveers in the Telecom Sector. Similarly, the Ministry of Education is starting a bachelor’s degree program for the in-service Agniveers.
IGNOU will design and execute the program, says the Education ministry. The army, Navy, and Air force will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IGNOU to implement the program.
Under IGNOU’s specially designed degree program, in-service training counts for 50 percent credit, the rest to come from a choice-based basket of courses
The framework of the program has been duly recognized by the concerned regulatory bodies – All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) and UGC.
Degree will be awarded by IGNOU as per UGC nomenclature (BA; B. Com.; BA (vocational); BA (Tourism Management), and will be recognized both in India and abroad for employment and education.
The Indian government has introduced a four-year term defense service scheme Under Agnipath to make the forces future-ready. However, post-retirement career uncertainties of the short-term soldiers are the moot concern of the scheme.
