Kunduli gang rape and suicide case: NHRC intervenes, engages expert team to fetch report in 15 days

Bhubaneswar: As the Kunduli gang rape case is creatiung turmoil in the state following the victim’s suicide, the National Human Right Commission (NHRC) today has stepped in to play its role. It has decided to engage a team of experts to carry out a detail investigation of the case.

 

The NHRC, considering a right activist’s plea directed the Deputy General (investigation Division) to form a team that would visit Kunduli to bring out with a detail report on the circumstances those led the victim’s suicide within 15 days.

 

The top human right body has also sought relevent documents relating to the case, such as the victim’s staement, medical reports, treatment records from the Additional Deputy General (ADG) Police Human Right Protection Cell (HRPC).

 

A 14 year dalit school girl from Kunduli in Koraput district of Odisha has rocked the state on October 12 with a severe allegation that four persons in army fatigue had raped her two days before.

 

Given the sensitivity of the case the Odisha Government assigned the case to the Crime Branch which in its report to the NHRC had discarded the girl’s allegation.

 

The girl under went a series of medical treatment followed by mental counseling before the news of her death broke on January 23. Police reported she had hanged herself to death. However the girl had adhered to her charges, rather she had reveled before the media that she had been forced withdraw from her allegations.

 

In a parallel development DGP R. P Sharma had directed to get the samples collected from the victim re-examined in the Central  Forensic Labrotary( in kolkata.
