Tamilnadu Chief Minister J. jayalalitha was sentenced to serve four year jail term as a Bangalore sessions court found her guilty of amassing assets worth disproportionate to her known sources of income.
To mark judicial bravery Justice Michael D’ Cunha read the judgment in the afternoon convicting the CM Jayalalitha and three of her co-accused Sasikala Natrajan, , J Elavarasi and V N Sudhakaran in the 18 years old graft case under Sections 109 and 120 (b) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988
All co accused were awarded four years of imprisonment besides Jayalalitha was fined Rs 100Cr and other three were fined Rs 10 Cr each. Along with the three convicts Jayalalitha was sentenced to an immediate jail term, and was sent to Parappana Agrahara prison in Bangalore.
The Department of Vigilance and anti Corruption (DVAC) of Tamilnadu, in 1997 had filed a case in the Chennai High Court against Jayalalitha for gathering Rs 66.65 Cr of assets during her first term as the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu not matching with her known source of income.
In 2003 the case was transferred to Bangalore’s special court following a petition filed by DMK leader K Anbazhagan for he expressed doubt on conduct of fair trial under with Jayalalitha as the Chief Minioster.
