INX-MEDIA CASE: NO RESPITE FOR CHIDAMBARAM ON MONDAY,CBI CUSTODY EXTENDS TILL AUG 30

The Criminal Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday won another 4-day custody of former Union Minister P Chidambaram. In a day of judicial setbacks for the Congress heavyweight, the Supreme Court refused to do anything on Chidambaram’s request for protection against arrest by CBI after the arrest. Chidambaram’s another petition challenging the arrest by CBI was not in the list for hearing. The hearing on a plea seeking protection against his arrest by ED remained incomplete after the day.

The Special Court extended the CBI Custody of Mr. Chidambaram till August 30.

However, the apex court has extended the protection against arrest by the ED to the next day.

After the proceedings in the Supreme Court early in the day, CBI presented Mr. Chidambaram before the Special Court seeking his custody for four more days citing “uncooperative” as the reason. Mr. Chidambaram’s CBI custody was to end today.

CBI, on 22 August, had arrested Mr. Chidambaram from his residence amid high drama after the later failed to get his protection against arrest renewed in the Delhi High Court.

CBI is investigating into a link of P Chidambaram in the INX- MEDIA scam of Rs 305 crore. The premier investigative agency claims that Mr. Chidambaram, as the Finance Minister had illegally favored INX-MEDIA to collect Rs 305 crore from the overseas in 2008.
