And, the high-level selection panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to remove Alok Verma as the CBI chief only 36 hours after he was reinstated to the post with a Supreme Court order. The decision was passed by the force of 2-1 majority on the basis of the CVC report. Besides Prime Minister Modi, the two other panel members were Mallikarjun Kharge the leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Justice A K Sikri nominee of Chief Justice of India.
The panel took the decision on Thursday after two and a half hours of meeting in the Prime Minister’s residence, it had an inconclusive meeting the previous day also.
Mallikarjun Khardge was the one who had the dissenting vote.
The government of India had sent Alok Verma on forced leave on October 23 following there surfaced quarrels between him and his deputy Rakesh Asthana. The Government had ordered both out of their responsibility citing the feud between the two top post holders in CBI is affecting its credibility.
Mr.Verma had challenged the decision in the Supreme Court and subsequently earned a reinstatement decision in his favor on January 8.
The Apex Court had reinstated Alok Verma as the CBI chief with a check on his policy-making power and left it on the high-power select committee to take decisions on the powers of Verma in a week’s time.
