Bhubaneswar: One man was killed in police firing that ensued from a Police-Public clash at Chandpur in Nayagarh on Thursday. Besides 17 more people were also injured in the incident. According to local source a sit-down strike of about 3000 people against police failure to arrest the culprit in a quadruple murder case graduated to unruly reactions and led to clash with the police. “Police”, as DGP Sanjiv Marik said, “had to open fire at the mob as the final resort” after lathi charge and gas lob failed to disperse them.
Additional forces have been mobilized to Chandpur as the situation there is tense though under control, said the DGP. Additional DG Binayanand Jha (law and order) rushed to assess the situation there.
The deceased was identified as Pradip Behera of Tangi area as the CM Naveen Pattnaik has announced ex-gratia of Rs 2Lac for the nearest kin of the deceased.
One local man named Sarat Patra , on Saturday night, on Sept 6 returned home from work only to find his father , wife and two children lying in pool of blood, a prima facie indication of brutal murder. The sensationality of the incident created a public demand for early apprehension of the culprit and It snowballed to an agitation as police failed found to be in empty hand even after six days.
