Most wanted Maoist Sushil and his wife Sony were killed in a gun fight today in the Pacheripani forest on Angul- Deogarh border. They were carrying a cash reward of Rs25 lac on their heads-Rs20lac on Sushil and Rs5lac on Sony.
Special Operation Group (SOG) and Special Investigation Wing (SIW) had jointly conducted an operation on Sunday in the Pacheripani forest on the basis of intelligence input to encounter the leftist operators. And they gunned down the couple after three hours of bullet exchange with them in the afternoon. Others engaged in the fight finally ran away.
Police DG B.K. Singh briefed about the incident to the media in his camp office in Cuttack.
A rifle, a carbine, some explosives, Maoist literatures including some other materials have been recovered from the site of operation.
l Sushil alias Basant alias Puttapaka Kumaraswamy was the area commander of the Kalinganagar Division with mineral-rich districts like Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul and Keonjhar being its operation area. Sushil had as many as 78 cases against him in different police stations. He was an accused in 30 murder cases.
In 2010 he had abducted police ASI Umesh Marandi but released him after 10 days.
He was on the run for the last 15 years before he was finally eliminated on Sunday.
Police see it as a major achievement to neutralize Maoist unrest in the region.
