Mahanadi water row: Odisha forms two bodies to deal with the Mahanadi water issue

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has erected two asembly – bodies on Thursday to take on the states’s fight over the Mahanadi water. Odisha Chief Naveen Patnaik will lead the All Party Committee while the other one, the House Committee will move under Speaker Pradip Amant. Each panel will have 15 members each from all parties imcluding from the BJP.

The Odisha assembly made this move in compliance with two resolutions passed earlier this month after the Central Governement categorically refused to comply with Odisha’s demand for Mahanadi water dispute tribunal.

Through an affidavit in the Supreme Court on December 5, the Ministry of Water Resource of the Central Government had stated against formation of the Mahandi water dispute tribunal citing Odisha government’s non-cooperation as the reason.

In the beginning, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) was carrying the fight on its own; Similarly BJP’s state unit in Odisha has its own political compulsion to abide by the center’s stand.

In the new development following the Center’s stand of rejecting the tribunal proposal of Odisha all the political parties felt it safe to be at one on the issue.

On Dec 7, a day after the Center’s affidavit in the Supreme Court against the Mahanadi tribunal, CM Naveen Pattnaik indicated his party’s readiness to carry along all political parties in the Mahanadi water fight after a all party meeting on that day.
