An under construction bridge over Jira river at Jamdola in Bhoden block of Bargarh gave in during slab casting on Sunday. Seven people are reported to be injured, three of them are serious.
The in-question bridge is a Rs8.5crore-project under Odisha government’s Biju Setu Yojana, while Department of Rural Development is its Executing Authority body.
Soon after the mishap the department has suspended the Executive Engineer, one assistant Engineer nnd a junior engineer associated in the project, said Odisha Rural Development Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh.
The Jira Bridge collapse marks the second such incident in fifteeen days since the Bomikhal Fly –over tragedy in Bhubaneswar on 10th of this month.
As per available report there have been 8 bridge collapses in the last 4 years to instigate concern..
In July this year part of the Gurupriyabriya Bridge at Chitrakonda in Malkanagiri district had caved in.
The bridge connecting Banki and Athagarh near Jaatpur fell down in August 2014 leaving 15 injured.
Experts suspect low grade work and material to be the cause behind such incidents.
However it seems the odisha government cares the least to sort out any preventive measure for such mishaps alleged Odisha BJP and stated PC deals as the responsible factor for the tragedies.
“How many collapses will take the government to wake up?” asked BJP spokesman Sajjan Sharma. He said, the frequency of bridge collapses has exposed the abject PC deal in the projects.” as he blamed the Works department under CM Naveen Pattnaik as the one where PC deals happens in maximum.
