
LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) touched the Seven crore mark on Friday as Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan presented the landmark connection to Geeta Devi in New Delhi.
The free gas connection scheme, launched in May 2016 by the Modi government, had the initial target of providing clean fuel gas cover to 5 crore poor women by 2019-20 has been revised to 8 crore by 2020-21. On March 8, in thirty-four months it reached the seven- croreth beneficiary.
“We have achieved our milestone in an unprecedented speed.”says Mr. Pradhan.“It is a happy coincidence that we have achieved the 7 croreth milestone one of the largest women-centric scheme PMUY on the occasion of International women’s day.”
Families with LPG connections in India count 13 crore till 2014. It is now 26.63 crore.
To improve access of LPG, the Minister said, “we are working on the world’s biggest 2000 km LPG pipeline from Kandla to Gorakhpur at the cost of Rs 9000 crore.” The government has recently involved the Common Service Centers in LPG -distribution as a measure to strengthen the LGP delivery machinery.
