NDA’s presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu filed her nomination on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Cabinet Ministers, BJP Chief Ministers, and representatives of the allies in NDA were present at the event. BJP president J P Nadda also witnessed the nomination.
After the nomination, Ms. Murmu communicated with the opposition leaders- Congress’ interim president Sonia Gandhi, NCP chief Sarad Pawar, and TMC head Mamata Banarjee for their support. The opposition has Yashwant Sinha as their candidate in the presidential fray.
By the nomination, Ms.Murmu has assured the support of Naveen Pattanaik’s BJD and Jagamohan Rao’s YSRC- the two big parties outside of NDA. Naveen Pattanaik has appealed to vote for Draupadi Murmu as an Odia irrespective of party credentials. JMM has also hinted at considering Draupadi Murmu for her tribal identity.
Ms. Murmu submitted four sets of nomination papers, PM Modi being the proposer in one. Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states are proposers in the second set. Similarly, the other two have MPs and MLAs from Gujurat and Himachal Pradesh as proposers.
Election for the President of India will be held on 18 July; and the result will be out on 21 July.
