Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Legislative Council plan got the Cabinet clearance on Friday before it will be made to pass through a series of the legislative processes.
Informing about it Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh said that a proposal for the formation of Odisha legislative Council had been approved in the Cabinet Meeting held under CM Naveen Patnaik. A resolution in this regard will be brought in the Monsoon Session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly beginning from September 4.
The legislative Council will have 49 members in it in compliance with the constitutional rule that limits the size of the Council to be one third of the Size of the Assembly. There are 147 members in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
The Minister further informed that the Council would claim Rs 35 crore annually to work, as he added that the Old Vidhan Saudha will be the base of the Council for functioning till it gets a new building of its own however the Secretariat of the Assembly will operate the Council also.
The Government of Odisha in January 2015 had assigned a committee to analyse different models of Vidhan Councils in the country to select a suitable one for Odisha.
The Committee headed by Nrusingha Charan Sahu on August 3 had submitted the report after studying the Vidhan Councils in Bihar and Telengana.
