Election -2019: Sonia from Raebareli, Congress releases its first list of UP candidates

Congress on Thursday released 11 names including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi of Uttar Pradesh in its first list of candidates for the ensuing parliament elections. Notably, Priyanka Gandhi who has been into direct politics recently with a crucial role in Congress does not figure in this list.

The release bears a significant political message on the backdrop of recent developments in the Uttar Pradesh political field – formation of the SP -BSP alliance ignoring Congress in UP, Congress’ asserting measures to show its relevance.

Sonia Gandhi will continue to fight from Raebareli against all the speculations that she would give way to Priyanka Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi will contest from Amethi. Congress has picked those seats in its first list those are clear cut.

In Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh’s SP and Mayawati’s BSP has cracked an alliance a month ago and recently they have taken RLD in the front with a seat- sharing formula of 37-38-3. Two seats- Amethi and Raebareli, they opted not to contest in.

After Congress failed to attract any consideration in the front, Rahul Gandhi had announced that his party would go alone with full strength in Uttar Pradesh that claims 80 seats in the Lok Sabha.

However, back-channel talk going on to make some place for Congress in the alliance is doing the round. And the list came.

Among the other important names figured in the list are Salmaan Khurshid from Farukhabad and Saleem Iqbal Shervani from Badaun.
