Bird flu: Culling operation in keranga goes on. Entire Odisha is under surveillance.

Khordha district administration have managed to carry out its Avian culling operation in Kernga on Wednesday a day after it faced challenges from the local people. The exercise has been initiated in Kernga in the Khordha District of Odisha in the wake of Bird flu virus H5N1was detected there. Nearly 25000 chickens and poultry will be eliminated as a measure to prevent a bird flu outbreak.

“entire Odisha has been kept under surveillance” said Bishnupada Sethi , Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the state’s Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department as the culling operation is undergoing in Keranga.

The National institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal found H5N1virus test positive in the samples brought from kerang region triggering alert messages.

After the finding the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, in the Ministry of Agrculture and Family welfare asked the Odisha government to carry out the control and containment operations.

The state government has also been asked to keep surveillance over the area in the radius of 10 Km from the outbreak site.

As per an official’s saying “Over 2,500 poultry birds are being culled within one kilometre of the epicentre for control and containment of bird flu. It’s the first time in the current season that this type of bird flu was detected in the state and in the same area.”

Keranga in 2012 also had witnessed the outbreak of bird flu that had led to culling of 30,000 chickens and poultry then.

H5NI the virus that causes avian influenza commonly known as bird flu can transmit to animals like pigsand horses and even to human being.
