The central government has reduced Goods and Service Tax (GST) on all Electric Vehicles to 5% from the prevailing 12%. Government has also slashed GST on chargers and charging stations of EVs from 18% to 5%. It is seen as a move by the government to promote Electric Vehicles as the vehicle of the age.
This revision in GST took place in the 36th Council Meeting of GST held today via Video Conference under the chairmanship of Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman.
The GST council has also recommended exempting GST on the hiring of Electric Buses by the local authority.
The change in GST will be effective from 1st of August.
